Athlete of the Month Sherry Sorsdal
By Lynda Dufour Personal Trainer: John Rutan
Sherry Sorsdal flat out admits that she’s not the athletic type. to do two more repetitions and to keep increasing the weight.
It’s something I wouldn’t do if I was just working out by myself.”
“Everyone who knows me will tell you that,” says Sherry can-
didly. “I was never really interested in sports other than watch- ONLINE: SCTEXAS.ORG
ing football and baseball. Even being Athlete of the Month is
funny to me because I hate to work out. I took archery and I
played golf in my late twenties, but I was never very good at it,
and I was on a bowling league for a short time,” she adds, as
if to catalogue her missteps. “I took gymnastics in college and
was black and blue the whole semester.”
All that said, however, Sherry happens to be one of John Rutan’s
hardest-working clients. The Sun City Texas personal trainer
claims he never ceases to be amazed at the amount of weight
that Sherry, 69, can lift for such a petite person. Not only has
she gained substantial strength and improved cardiovascular
conditioning, he says, but she has also developed “very nice,
tight muscle tone.” And that’s something that all active women
strive for – no matter what their age.
Sherry only “appeared” to be in good shape when she began
personal training a few years ago, according to John. In fact,
she had lost most of her strength as she aged. “That’s a pretty
common issue here in Sun City,” he notes, adding that Sherry
is now competent with a variety of weight machines and also
occasionally works with free weights. “We concentrate on the
big compound moves and also work the core. Sherry has had
some back issues and we have to be careful, but she is always
willing to try new things and she never complains.”
Although foot surgery in 2012 derailed Sherry’s personal train-
ing sessions, she re-enlisted John’s help this year to get in tip-
top shape for her wedding. The retired interior designer from
Lubbock, who once served as president of Solos, married Jerry
Sorsdal in April. The newlyweds are active in the Sun City
community, and they enjoy dancing, traveling and riding their
three-wheel Can Am Spyder.
Sherry says personal training has not only improved her muscle
tone, but has vastly improved the strength in her legs, arms and
core. “I’ve mainly noticed how much easier it is going up stairs
and walking for longer distances,” she adds. “John pushes me
