Many Sun City Texas residents enjoy driving their golf carts
to get around the community, especially during the warmer
months. The June issue of Sun Rays offered some safety tips
on driving golf carts. These additional safety reminders on
golf carts will help keep you, your loved ones and community
members safe.

Don’t overload golf carts
 • Only carry passengers in your golf cart for which you have

seats. It’s tempting to squeeze in visiting grandkids because
they may be small and don’t weigh much. But if they get
frisky, impatient or ― heaven forbid ― start fighting, some-
   body could go overboard!

 • If you pack in more people or packages for which the cart
was designed, it is an accident waiting to happen. Extra
weight can damage your shocks and wear down tires. Your
cart could tip over, slide or skid on turns or bounce somebody
   right out of the cart.

Stay fully inside a moving cart
 • The driver and passengers should always stay fully inside

a golf cart when it’s moving and not lean or extend hands
   or feet outside the cart.

 • Be extremely aware of what grandchildren are doing when
you’re driving them. Children waving, changing seats,
squirming or moving around in carts is dangerous. Consider
having someone with you to help with youngsters.

 • Look out for speed bumps and dips on the road so you can
adjust your speed and prevent you or your passengers from
   getting thrown from the cart.

Drive legally
 • The golf cart driver must have a license and insurance. No

matter how much your grandchildren beg, do not allow them
to drive your cart unless they are legally authorized to drive.

 • Don’t let the grandkids sit on your lap and steer while
you are driving. This is not only against the law but it’s
   dangerous. Keep everybody safe!

Abiding by laws established for regular vehicles is a good rule
of thumb. Learning from others’ mistakes is a great way to
stay out of accidents. Citizens on Patrol (COPs) wishes you
happy motoring. The next time you see a COPs car, give us a
wave, but only with your arm inside the cart!

COPs needs you! Volunteer just four hours a
month. As a volunteer, you can drive a COPS
car, serve on the COPs office staff (your home,
our cell phone) or do maintenance by gassing
up a COPS car, take it in for service or to a car
wash. Please call 512-966-1362, Monday through
   Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
