and golf lost $50,000, which Pulte reimbursed. However, we
were not yet at 7,500 rooftops (three courses X 2,500 homes).

 • “Golf is watering with costly potable water.” No. Over the past
four years, staff facilitated the addition of wells to supplement
the use of non-potable water used to water the courses. The
golf courses are watered with 100 percent non-potable water.
From 2011-2014, our courses reduced non-potable water
expenses by more than 40 percent (annual savings of more
than $180,000), ensuring that golf in Sun City Texas remains
   a sustainable amenity.

Water Matters

Sun City Texas Water Management

Water conservation in Central Texas will
always be a hot topic of discussion. The
recent rains and inflows into the lakes
have falsely lulled many into thinking the
drought is over and that all our water woes
have abated. That would be a misconcep-
tion. We have been in varying stages of
drought since I moved back to Texas 25 years ago. And with
Central Texas named one of the fastest-growing areas in the
nation, water demands also continue to grow. Water conserva-
tion will be an ongoing issue.

On May 29, the City of Georgetown lifted its 19-month restric-
tion of two days a week for lawn watering. We are now back to a
three-day a week program. Fortunately we don’t have to irrigate
three days a week, and I would recommend against it. Let’s save
money and water by maintaining the twice-a-week watering
practice we’ve been using for the past 19 months. Watering more
would be throwing money down the drain.

If you need help setting up your controller, please contact a Water
Matters Ambassador through your neighborhood representative
for a complete and thorough irrigation system evaluation.

The extreme precipitation that occurred in May rapidly filled
Berry Creek to the point of completely obscuring the Berry
Creek Dam, causing a torrential flow of the swollen waterway.
In May, we received 12 inches in rain, with 8 inches in the
last week of May. The ease at which the water evacuated the
property was due exclusively to the efforts of our native area
maintenance crew. This crew is led by Charles Moore. His
team members are Santiago Paita, Victor Koval, and Emillio
Diaz. They inspect the creeks yearly, as well as during and
after any significant rain event, to safeguard the unobstructed
flow of water through our property.
