Have you ever considered embarking on something kids
might call a do-over when it comes to your home landscape
design? Well, Nancy and John have done just that. Their
previous landscape has been replaced by one that conveys
beauty, while it conserves water and is low maintenance. With
the goal of having a xeriscape environment with less rock and
more plants than is often associated with xeriscaping, they
worked with a landscaper who helped achieve their vision.
While their design incorporates some rock, it also includes
areas of mulched plantings filled with tidbits of thyme that
will grow together and cover swatches of the planting bed.
Artfully designed and spaced divisions move across the
yard, including direct sightings of beautiful pottery, a water
feature, succulents and ornamental grasses that sway in the
wind. Beautiful plantings of crape myrtles, Texas sage, Pride
of Barbados, blackfoot daisy, esperanza, a bed for herbs
and annuals can be found toward the rear of the property.
Backing up to a green space, their yard fits deftly with the
picturesque thicket of trees that contains a lone possumhaw
holly that literally illuminates the gray green landscape with
brilliant red berries in mid-winter. To top it off, their landscape
changes included the incorporation of drip irrigation and
rainwater collection. As Nancy points out, irrigating areas
that don’t need water only encourages opportunistic and
stealthy weeds to grow. ~ Nancy Hontz
