Today, we interviewed a couple who has
been married 70 years! Isn’t that amaz-
ing? But my favorite folks are always the
World War II veterans, and Betty Schled-
er, with Honor Flight—somebody who
can do all of that is pretty spectacular.

that was special. He was a World War
II veteran, and a Sun City resident—
I’m one of the few second-generation Sun
Citians.

it’s just so incredibly interesting to learn
about my neighbors!

My favorite moment was with Dr. Gon-
zalo Garza. He wrote a book about taking
care of his wife with Alzheimer’s—it’s a
daily diary of how his wife changed. I
was in tears by the end of the interview.

I’d say just interviewing people. There are
so many wonderful stories in Sun City!

No favorite moment, just knowing your
neighbors—it’s really amazing all of the
things people have done.

It happened during our first year—Me-
morial Day 2004. It was on the stage
of the old ballroom, and it was a live
show. The ceremony started at 11 a.m.,
and we taped at 9:30 a.m. with a panel
of veterans and the family of veterans: a
resident whose dad was a World War I
bugler, my dad who was a World War II
veteran fought on D-Day, a member of the
Strategic Air Command (SAC), a veteran
of the Vietnam War, and a resident who
was a retired colonel and whose son was
the first killed in Afghanistan. We were
all crying by the time it was over—it was
just unbelievable.

Learning of the amazing lives that our
