He got her at a garage sale
I got my wife at a garage sale—kind of.
I was looking for a lamp to put in the apartment I had
just moved into.
The lady holding the sale said, “Aren’t you the new church
organist?”
I said, “Yes.”
She then asked, “Are you married?”
I looked at her directly, hesitated, and replied, “No.”
She got all excited and ran into the house shouting, “You
have GOT to meet my daughter’s first grade teacher!” Sec-
onds later she returned with a class picture and pointed
out a very cute teacher.
After that I scanned the congregation every Sunday
trying to locate her. No luck. But one night at break-
time during choir practice I looked across the hall and
there she was - addressing about 200 parents in a first
communion class. I boldly walked right up to her. She
turned bright red. With the microphone still on, I asked
her if she wanted to go out for coffee after the class. She
stammered, “OK.”
Immediately, all the parents began to applaud. Let’s just
say I started out looking for a lamp, but ended up with
the light of my life!

It all started with a hayride
The story of our love for each other began on a hayride
on the night of November 10, 1959.
I had been invited to go on a school-sponsored hayride
by a girl who was a member of a girls’ social club at a
local junior high school.
Following the hayride, there was a sock hop held in the
school cafeteria. The girl who invited me had a family
function to attend that evening and had to leave the
sock hop early.
As I was standing by the refreshment table, my best
friend came over and asked me if I would ask his date
to dance, as he wanted to ask another girl to dance. He
pointed me in the direction of his date for the evening,
and I walked over to ask her to dance. As I approached
her, I noted with great delight her outstanding good looks.
I did ask her to dance, and we danced several dances.
At the end of one of those dances, I asked her if she
would like to step outside to walk around and cool off.
We grabbed a blanket and walked outside. As we were
walking outside, I said to her how much she looked like
a bride at a wedding with that blanket pulled over her
head. She just laughed.
As we walked on, I made the statement that I thought
I would marry her one day. Again she laughed, and she
asked me if I had a date picked out. I told her that I
did—June 1, 1967.
I missed it by one month; we were married July 1, 1967
and have been dancing for 45 years. And there have been
many laughs and many dances along the way.
