Most states permit home brewing of 100
gallons of beer per adult (18 years or older)
annually, with a maximum of 200 gallons
when there are two or more adults residing
in the household. According to John,
home brewing wasn’t even legal until
1978, when President Jimmy Carter and
Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) created a
tax exemption on beer brewed at home for
personal or family use. The regulation of
alcohol is predominantly managed by the
21st Amendment, and laws can vary from
state to state. Texas, for instance, did not
legalize home brewing until 1983, while
Mississippi and Alabama did not legalize
the hobby until 2013, becoming the last
two states in the country to do so.
