WHOSE FLAG IS IT, ANYWAY?
“On a recent trip to Mexico City, my wife,
Belinda, and I found the “Lost” Alamo Flag
in the Museo Nacional De Historia located
at the Chapultepec Castle. The Alamo Flag
is really the flag of the New Orleans Greys,
a volunteer militia company, that came to
Texas in 1835 to help in the Texas Revolution
against Mexico. The more famous green,
white, and red ‘1824’ flag that flew over
the Alamo was probably destroyed in the
battle or the aftermath. General Santa Anna
sent the New Orleans Greys flag back to
Mexico City after the battle to prove to
his government that Americans from the
North were coming into Texas to help the
revolution against Mexico. It has been there
ever since. A decade ago, Governor
Rick Perry’s office made an attempt
to have the flag returned to Texas,
but to no avail. For now, if you want
to see the only remaining Texas flag
that flew at the Alamo, you will need
to make a trip to Mexico City to see it,
but don’t show too much interest in it.
We had two security guards watching
us as we snapped numerous photos.
I think they were nervous we would
try to take it with us back to Texas.”
