46 | SUNRAYS DECEMBER 2016 Above: When collaborating, Carol and
Sue randomly select three paint chips
from a box filled with hundreds of
colors. The chosen hues then become
the palette of their next shared artwork.
Below: Carol holds up one of her
earlier paintings which served as the
inspiration for “Grazing the Fault.”
designer approved their plans and, as Carol
puts it, “Leslie turned us loose to collabo-
rate on the final product.”
Of course, the painting did not come to-
gether over a few hours or weeks. The
artists began work in February with the
time-consuming process of ordering can-
vases and preparing materials. Once all
the supplies were in place and the “draft”
completed, six weeks of long days and late
nights of endless painting followed, each
artist working alone to start and then put-
ting the work together and collaborating.
A lot of time was spent in Carol’s Walburg
studio where the two had first met so many
years ago.
Being the largest artwork the two had ever
done together, the size of the canvases and
transporting them to and from the hotel
posted quite a challenge. The two laugh
recalling the ordeal, which ultimately re-
sulted in Sue’s husband renting a truck
and trailer to get the job done.
Once completed, the artists titled their
work, “Grazing the Fault” in reference to
the Balcones Fault, the fault line that splits
Texas between the American East and
West and the focus of the painting. Carol
describes joining their works together into
one painting as a “meeting of the minds.”
According to Sue, there is no one side of
the painting which is the star, rather it is
the joining them together which results in
one beautiful whole.
With the success of their composite master-
piece, both Sue and Carol anticipate their
creative endeavors together will continue.
Sue states, “It was a wonderful experience
sharing work time with my friend Carol.”
Both artists are appreciative of the op-
portunity given to them, and thanks to
“Grazing the Fault,” the friendship of these
two Texans will be enjoyed by visitors from
around the world for many years to come.
