Athlete of the Month By Lynda Dufour
CJJamison was a natural athlete and the picture of
health growing up in the inner city of Washington,
DC. She can hardly remember a time when she didn’t
incorporate some form of exercise in her daily life, whether it be
jogging or team sports such as baseball, basketball and tennis.

That’s why the massive stroke at age 47 was so unthinkable.

“Sure, after I had the stroke, I was weak and sad, but not discour-
aged,” says CJ, who faced the long road of recovery with faith and
determination. “My motto,” she adds, “is ‘exercise, exercise and
always be Christlike.’ I relish the opportunity to exercise on a
daily basis. I see the results, and my quality of life is wonderful!”

Since moving to Sun City Texas in 2012, following 37 years with
the U.S. Federal Civil Service and some 20 years with the Dis-
trict of Columbia Air National Guard, CJ has worked out once
a week with Sun City personal trainer Shepherd Green. During
a typical, hour-long session at the Fitness Center, they tackle
overall strength as well as balance, using weight machines, cable
machines, free weights, rubber tubing, and the stability ball.
Because CJ, 63, is always struggling to gain weight, they also
discuss nutrition.

“Shepherd customizes my workout to specifically address my gait
and arm issues as a result of the stroke,” says CJ, married for 31
years to John “Smitty” Smith, Jr. “After working with Shepherd
over the past four years, my range of motion, strength, muscle
tone, balance and stamina have improved immensely. We’ve
had an understanding from the onset that I will not give him
any excuses.”

CJ also plays pickleball, golfs with the WGA-9 holers, and partici- CJ Jamison

her never-ending effort to gain weight, she enjoys the fellowship Personal Trainer: Shepherd Green

Women organization and the Georgetown Ladies’ Supper Club. ‘I can do anything’ attitude. “She doesn’t allow her disability to

she says, proudly.

Shepherd calls CJ “an inspiration” and says he appreciates her day of the rest of her life.”
