Sun City Cares:
Loving Hands
“H By Ginger Przybys
ave Polish will Travel” could be the theme of a new TV reality
show. But for some lucky residents of Park Place Care Center, it’s
something much more.
The first Friday of every month, a dedicated group of five to seven women from
Neighborhood 31 drive to Park Place, located at 121 FM 971 in Georgetown,
bringing joy and pampering to the lives of some of the women and men who live
there. The pampering is in the form of free manicures, while the joy is through
sharing life’s experiences during engaging conversation.
The Loving Hands Outreach Program was created in 2009 by Eileen Woods
and Jo Hatley. Jo wanted to start an outreach program in honor of her mother.
Together with Eileen, a licensed cosmetologist, they envisioned bringing this simple
act of a manicure to those folks who have lost the ability to go to beauty salons due
to limited mobility.
Eileen previously owned a nail salon. After retirement, she was left with many unused
supplies and equipment that she was able to donate to the program. Eileen trained volunteers
in her home, teaching them not only how to do manicures, but also how to take into consideration
those whose hands and fingers might be afflicted with arthritis or other maladies.
The Outreach Program currently has 11 active members providing manicures; however, the whole
neighborhood participates in some way. Last year, over $200 in cash was donated for the purchase
of salon supplies at wholesale prices.
