                                  HEAR ME ROAR!
                     Shown at left is a Western Dusk Sing-
                     ing Cicada. This is the cicada you of-
                     ten hear “going off” like a chainsaw at
                     dusk during the hottest days of sum-
                     mer. Their sound is over 100 decibels,
                     one of the loudest sounds in the ani-
                     mal kingdom! They are harmless; the
                     earlier stage (nymphs) spending years
                     underground nibbling on roots and
                     such before coming up to the surface
                     in order to emerge from their old shell,
                     mate, and then die, all in the order of
                     a few weeks.
