CA NEWS
USE IT OR LOSE IT! Kudos to the LMH
The new mailbox at the Cowan Creek Amenity Center is Water Conservation Program
being under utilized and is in danger of being removed by
the U.S. Post Office. Residents who live in the vicinity of Submitted by Jim Romine, Executive Director
this mailbox may wish to begin using it more often to avoid
having it removed. The Water Conservation Subcommittee of the Landscaped
Maintained Homes has been conducting studies on products
designed to reduce water use for landscaping. Homes in the
LMH program were outfitted with soil moisture sensors, which
reduced irrigation by 40% during the period of March through
October in 2014. Based on these savings, CA staff installed
200 more of these sensors into LMH yards this year and plan
to continue to add the sensors over the next few years until all
Landscaped Maintained Homes have them. The soil sensor’s
primary advantage is that it interrupts the irrigation control-
ler at times when irrigation is scheduled, but should not run
due to sufficient moisture in the soil resulting from recent
rainfall. The addition of these sensors will considerably aid in
the reduction of potable water use for irrigation by our LMH
program. All homeowners may want to consider these sensors
as another tool to reduce irrigation when the soil already has
sufficient moisture. Hats off to the LMH Committee and their
Water Conservation group’s efforts in this area and to Subcom-
mittee Chair Larry Davis, staff members Catrin Dubois, David
Longacre and Aaron Johnson for their wonderful support.
