If your circumstances have changed and you are now a single
homeowner, you are entitled to a second badge that may be
used by a guest. Your adult visitor may use this guest badge
to go to the pool and/or fitness center. Unlike your standard
48 annual paperless guest passes, you do not need to be pres-
ent to sign in your guest. This badge is good for an unlimited
number of uses and never expires.
To get your guest badge, bring the badge you no longer need
to the Member Services Office in the Social Center. We will
also make the necessary changes to our membership database
and the online resident directory at this time.
Water Matters
Submitted by Carlton M. Mathis,
Sun City Texas Water Management
Though we have had some welcome and
beneficial rainfall totals in our area, none
of them has been drought busting. In fact,
the current drought has been elevated to
the worst on record. Water consumption and
conservation will continue to be a focus in
Central Texas. Under current restrictions,
the City of Georgetown permits landscape irrigation up to two
days a week, based on address. More detailed information can
be found at the city’s website: water.georgetown.org.
One topic discussed at a seminar I recently attended was soil
remediation through topdressing of compost and how healthy
soils are the basis and greatest reservoir for clean water. Com-
post can hold up to 20 times its weight in water. For every
additional 1% organic matter content, each cubic foot of soil
can hold an additional 1.5 quarts of plant-available water.
Increasing the organic matter content from 1 to 4% would
increase the volume of water to one-gallon water per cubic
foot of soil. For every 1% of organic matter added, soil can hold
an extra 16,500 gallons of plant-available water down to one
foot deep per acre.
A 2013 study regarding topdressing turf with compost showed
“a 10 day, post-irrigation ‘dry down’ period let control (turf)
drop to an ‘unacceptable quality level’ after day eight, while
turf with ¼” compost had no noticeable decline.” Dr. David
Chalmers says, “If more people could just handle that grass
can be a little tan in summer, it takes the pressure off to keep
watering. The grass will be fine!”
