GOLF
Course Improvements Update
Submitted by the Playability and Safety Subcommittee
Continued on page 53
The Playability and Safety Subcom-
mittee of the Sun City Golf Committee
conducts detailed golf course reviews
throughout the year by touring each
course with members of the Pro Shop
and Maintenance staff. Recommenda-
tions are made and reviewed by the
staff, after which a report is submitted
to the Golf Committee for review and
approval. The objective is to work with
the Sun City Golf Staff to make our golf
experience continually better and safer
for golfers.
Thanks in part to input from this com-
mittee, Sun City golf courses underwent
some major projects during 2013, pri-
marily at Legacy Hills and White Wing.
These projects included:
Legacy Hills Fairway Bunker
Renovations. .............................$250,000
White Wing #14 Drainage Issue...$26,000
White Wing Nursery Green......$43,000
Various Cart Path Repairs..........$6,000
Tree Trimming........................... $10,000
Funding for these projects came from the
Golf Reserves and the Non-Capital Im-
provements line item in the Golf Budget.
To continue this trend of improvements,
the Golf Committee’s Playability Sub-
committee recently has compiled three
individual reports (one for each golf
course), which include very specific rec-
ommendations for each hole. A summary
of the subcommittee’s findings and rec-
ommendations is as follows:
Cowan Creek Primary
Recommendations
• Mow/clear the wild growth in front of
tees 1, 3, 6, 12 and 17 monthly

are removed
• Trim back any trees or shrubs which
may obstruct the passage of golf carts
on the cart path
• Purchase and place three new large
sand boxes on holes 8,13 and 17
• Monitor and control the depth of sand
in all bunkers
Legacy Hills Primary
Recommendations
• Many trees need to be trimmed,
laced and have the canopy raised by
a qualified tree trimming company.
This project should be included in the
2015 operating budget.
• It is recommended that the current
sand be removed and replaced with
sand similar to that used in the White
Wing bunkers.
• To improve curb safety, river rock
rather than decomposed granite
should be used at drop areas around
cart paths.
• Recommend level three mowing ad-
jacent to the golf course receives a

In an effort to improve our pace of
play, emphasis has been placed on
accurate time keeping. Also, please
be sure that any player who has hit
her ball 10 times picks it up and
records a 10X on the score card.
For the sake of the golf courses,
following the 90 degree rule is
very important! This rule means
that golfers are not to ride down
the center of the course to get to
their ball. Carts should be turned
in a right angle (90 degrees) and
driven to the far side of the fair-
way or cart path and up until the
cart is at a right angle to the ball.
Following this procedure will help
to preserve our fairways.
April Pope was named the chair

tee, and now the task of securing
members to run for elected offices
has begun. The task force respon-

serving in this capacity are Donna
Betts, Membership and Golf Am-
bassador Chair; Jane Huffstutler,
who was a member of the WGA-18
and has been aWGA-9 member for
several years; Anne Hoke, one of
the newest members of the WGA-9
who also works on other Sun City
committees, and Carol Thonen, a
past President of the association.
Once their job is completed, the
new by-laws will be presented to
the membership for a vote.
