One of our favorite Grand Moments is Grandparent’s Day be-
cause our grandkids attend a school that designates a special
day called “Grandparent’s Day” each year. Grandparent’s Day
is filled with exciting, grandkid-oriented activities.
Usually the day begins about 8:30 a.m. with a bounty of light
snacks prepared by the school. Classroom visits with grandkids
and their teachers follow. During this time, grandparents also
view science and art projects made by grandkids, who are on
hand to discuss their projects with curious visitors.
As the day progresses, grandparents later assemble to watch
a program in which grandkids present elements of different
countries and their customs. The students recite this infor-
mation frommemory, and the grandparents attentively listen
and learn more about each country represented.
Before the day ends, grandparents and their grandkids tour
the school. Since this is a familiar place for the grandkids,
they enjoy showing off places like their cafeteria, library, and
playground.
At the end of the school day, grandkids and grandparents
know they have enjoyed another special time of building last-
ing relationships.

Until Hippopotami Fly
By RG Wyckoff, N30
I have a granddaughter who lives far away;
A Princess I confess that I miss.
I want her to know just how much that I love her
And ask her to remember this:
If I could I would give you a big Giraffe kiss
And a hug that’s as strong as a Bear;
I’d rub noses with you like the Eskimos do,
If a Swan I would fly to you there.
My love is too big for an Elephant’s trunk,
It’s as sweet as a Lion cub’s cry;
I’ll love you ‘till Kangaroos no longer jump,
Until Hippopotami fly!
I wish I could be there when she goes to bed
To tuck her in snug as a Bug;
I’d kiss her goodnight and then there in the moonlight,
I’d whisper as I give her a hug:
I’ll love you ’till Penguins have learned how to dance,
’Till Walruses learn how to walk;
I’ll love you ’till Song Birds forget how to sing,
And Chimpanzees have learned how to talk.
I’ll love you ’till Kittens aren’t cuddly and cute,
’Till the Oceans and Rivers are dry;
I’ll love you ’till Mountain Goats no longer climb,
Until Hippopotami fly!
There’s nothing so precious as a sweet young grandchild,
Not emeralds, diamonds, or gold;
I daydream each day of just what I would say,
If my granddaughter I could but hold:
I’ll love you ’till Bullfrogs grow up to be Bulls,
’Till Toadstools will turn into chairs;
I’ll love you ’till Zebras have lost all their stripes,
And Bald Eagles have learned to grow hair.
I’ll love you ’till Rabbits don’t hippity-hop,
Weeping Willows forget how to cry;
I’ll love you forever and that’s a long time,
Until Hippopotami fly!
I’ll love you forever and that’s a long time,
Until Hippopotami, fill up the sky, oh my;
Until Hippopotami fly!
Last August, Dick and I took our entire family to Disney World to celebrate six
birthdays and our 40th wedding anniversary. It was very hot and muggy that week
in Florida. We have four amazing grandchildren (Andrew, Leah, Ryan and Mat-
thew) but they were tired, and sick of waiting in lines. A half dozen adults were
trying to entertain the kids, all of them under six years of age.
But it was Matthew who stole my heart that day. We passed him around like a sack
of potatoes trying to keep the youngest member of our group distracted. I scooped
him up in my arms and started singing “It’s a Small World After All” in my silliest
Grandma voice. He looked at me. I looked at him. And we both started laughing.
Though it lasted only a moment, it was the capstone to a joyous family celebration.
it’s a small world, after all
