Several years ago I decided to take two of my grandchildren
on a vacation. What could be more exciting for them than
going to three different theme parks in Texas – Six Flags,
Schlitterbaun, and Sea World?
One thing that concerned me was that children generally
make a grandparent crazy by asking for everything they
see. I decided to fix that situation and made each of them a
checkbook and showed them how to write a check. I told them
I put $50 into each of their accounts and they weren’t to ask
me for any souvenirs but to write a check if they couldn’t live
without something. The checks were made out to the Bank
of Grandmom.
Little did I realize that Mathew didn’t understand what his
money would buy. We went to Six Flags and began to do all
the rides that were age appropriate for each of them. Having a
great time, the morning went by quickly and we began to get
hungry. Mathew kept saying he wasn’t hungry but Zoey and
I were starving so we headed for a restaurant. I kept asking
him if he was sure that he wasn’t hungry…and he sort of
shuffled his feet. Finally he asked me if he had to buy his own
food! Of course I hadn’t made plain the fact that I was buying
food, tickets and lodging! When he was told that he didn’t
have to buy his own food, he was suddenly starving to death!

Suzy’s Airplane Ride
Submitted by Wayne Smith, N11
Suzy knew that her granddaddy was
a pilot. After all, we had seen
Planes
together twice and she had all the die-
cast models from the show and knew all
their names. She had also visited the
glider port where granddaddy flies and
she had even sat in the tow plane. So for
Christmas last year granddaddy rented
a Cessna 172 to take her for her first
small airplane ride. Her mother insisted
that she sit in the back seat with Suzy,
and Suzy was happy with that. Now
Suzy is a little talker, so we arranged
that she had her own headset so that
she could communicate with everyone.
Unfortunately, sometimes Suzy talks
a little too much. As we were coming
back to land at the Georgetown airport,
she was chattering away while grand-
daddy was trying to talk to the tower
on the radio. Several requests that Suzy
remain quiet for a little while had no
effect. Finally, her mother did the un-
thinkable; at least it was unthinkable for
Suzy. Mom reached over and unplugged
Suzy’s microphone cord. Suzy was trau-
matized; she could talk but no one could
hear her. How awful. After a couple of
minutes of silence, her mom reconnected
her microphone and Suzy was quiet for
the rest of the flight.
Family Fun at iFLY

It was a fun time for all at Austin’s indoor skydiving
venue, iFLY. Our new challenge is to really sky dive!
