about the age of the oldest inhabitants
of the continent
With an estimated 3 percent of the site
excavated, over 2.6 million artifacts have
been unearthed, a volume equal to 65
percent of all Clovis artifacts uncovered
in the Americas to date. Work on the ex-
cavation is painstakingly slow, and often
accomplished only with bamboo slivers or
chopsticks, to assure that artifacts are
not damaged.
Dr. Wernecke and his staff give talks
and tours to more than 6,000 people a
year, with one simple goal: tomake people
aware of this treasure. “If I dig for the rest
of my life and don’t tell anybody about it,
it’s wasted,” he says. Thankfully, the only
waste here is the trash thrown out and
burned by an ancient people.

Dr. D. Clark Wernecke, executive director of the Gault School of Archaeological Research, explains the surprises found
at the Gault Site dig to a group of Senior University participants earlier this year.
