Sun Bowl:
A “Par-Tee”
in the Sun
Submitted by Kempa Rider
The WGA 9-Holers’ biggest tournament
of the year, the 14th Annual Invitational
Sun Bowl, was held on May 20 at Lega-
cy Hills Golf Course. The tournament,
which WGA-9 members began planning
in December 2013, successfully brought
in 128 players, including 50 guests from
the surrounding clubs of Lago Vista, Ter-
avista, Horseshoe Bay, Balcones, Berry
Creek, Point Venture and Star Ranch.
With so many registered players and
guests, Donna Betts created a trans-
portation and traffic plan, which was
carried out in part by members’ spous-
es who served as traffic directors and
cart-taxi drivers. Thanks for such great
service goes to Chuck Betts, Phil Carr,
Gary Cluck, Jim Glassmaker, Gary
Hamilton, E.M. Hay, John Hudson,
Tom Huffstutler, Rich Lyle, Jim Mar-
tucci, John McDuffy, Gary Preston, Tom
Reid, Frank Reinhardt, Bob Rider, Dave
Stockwell and Ken Tupacz—especially
for getting up so early to be ready to take
care of all those women! Credit also goes
to Donna Betts for her genius plan.
Following play, players headed to the
ballroom for the luncheon and awards.
This event was a true “Par-Tee” as ev-
eryone left with a gift of some type, in
addition to the team awards and prizes
for straightest drive, squiggle line, clos-
est to the pin, and longest putt. Eleven
door prizes were given out in addition to
an original David Prather painting—the
lucky winner of this popular prize was
Audrey Brookner. Jackie Fife volunteered
her time and talents to embroider 17 golf
towels, each of which served as a “sur-
prise” in the centerpiece of each table;
these towels were given away as prizes.
Thanks to the support of major spon-
sors and our conscientious committee
chairs, this year’s Sun Bowl was one to
remember!
