The following special events are taking place in January and February.
AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM
Volunteers are needed for AARP’s Tax-Aide
program, which is the nation’s largest vol-
unteer-run tax assistance and preparation
service for low- and medium-income tax-
payers. If you like working with numbers
and computers, being a Tax-Aidemight be
right for you; however, if you just like work-
ing andmeeting with people, maybe being
a Tax-Aide greeter and intake counselor
is your calling. The program provides tax
preparation training, which includes ap-
proximately 40 hours of tax code, AARP
policies, and computer applications. AARP
reimburses active Tax-Aides for mileage.
Tax-Aide volunteers generally donate 40
hours of their time over a 10-week period
beginning February 2014 and endingApril
15, 2014. Sites are located in Georgetown
at SunCity Texas and at The Caring Place.

KNIGhTS Of COluMBuS BINGO
Bingo in the Ballroom will be on Sun-
days, January 5 and 19 in the Social Cen-
ter Ballroom. Doors open at 5 p.m., and
games start at 6 p.m. Cash prizes will be
awarded. All proceeds are used to support

The Friends of the Georgetown Library’s
Hill Country Author Series will feature
author Jennifer DuBois on Friday, Janu-
ary 24 at 2 p.m. at the Georgetown Li-
brary. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Ms. Du-
Bois is the author of
Cartwheel
and will
be the first speaker of the new year in
the Author Series. Tickets are $13 in
advance and $15 at the door, and may
be purchased at the Second-Hand Prose
bookstore on the second floor of the li-
brary or by contacting Ricki McMillian
at 512-818-8074. All proceeds go toward
meeting unfunded requirements of the
Georgetown Public Library.
SENIOR uNIvERSITy
Senior University will begin classes
on January 27 and continue for six
weeks. Registration is in progress.
There will be a free lecture on Thursday,
February 13 at 7 p.m. in the ballroom, in
which Fred Burton will discuss “Under
Fire: the Untold Story of the Attack in
Benghazi.” Also, there is space available

EAST vIEw BAND MARDI GRAS
The East ViewHighSchool band and color
guard will be hosting its second Mardi
Gras Celebration on Saturday, February
1 from noon to 4 p.m. at East View High
School in Georgetown. This fun event in-
cludes a gumbo cook-off, entertainment,
craft and vendor booths, kids’ games and
activities, prize drawings and more! For

OnFebruary 6-7, SouthwesternUniversity
will host its 36th annual Brown Sympo-
sium, titled “Healing: The Art & Science
ofMedicine.” It will address genomicmedi-
cine, nanotechnology inmedicine, the craft
of medical practice, global health, and the
economics of health care reform, 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on

On Friday, February 7 at 6 p.m. in the
Social Center Ballroom, the Georgetown
Symphony Society will present the sec-
ond annual “Valentine Gala” fundraiser.

The Georgetown Palace Theatre presents

from February 14 through March
23. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays
at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tick-
