As I write this article for this Septem-
ber issue, it is hot and humid, but the
July rain has been wonderful! Our
courses seemed to have benefited from
the reported five inches we received over
that fantastic mid-July week. Wouldn’t
it be nice if Mother Nature would bless
us with enough precipitation to get out
of this drought―but, please, not in a
flood! For 9-holers, lush fairways and
greens plus low humidity are pre-
ferred; however, I think we would all
give up playing golf for a while if only
the weather patterns would supply us
with much-needed liquid from the sky!
Now, on with what is happening with
our group! Regular play days continued
on Tuesdays during August, but there
were no major tournaments. However,
this month will be the Club Champion-
ship followed by a more formal catered
event in the Ballroom. Thanks to Don
Hewlett’s sponsorship and generous
donation we are able to have a really
special night! Our ladies will also host
a Fun Fest and social with the ladies’
18-hole group. This is always a fabu-
lous day and a time when the benefit of
handicaps really comes to the forefront.
In October, things really kick into high
gear. We will participate in the annual
“Ring on a String” Charity Tournament,
Berry Bowl Invitational and Rally for
the Cure! Additionally, the nominating
committee will present the candidates
for the 2014 Board. Our membership
continues to grow and participation in
events increases. What a life!

UPCOMING GOLF
TOURNAMENTS
Mark your calendars now for these
upcoming Sun City Texas Golf
tournaments.
Under the guidance of Golf Committee
Member Mike Pender, this group works
diligently and regularly to keep our golf
course fairways and greens in excellent
condition supplementing the work of our
golf maintenance staff.
Teams volunteer to care for a particular
hole and they make a social event out of
it. Weekly or bi-weekly, they meet after
hours to fan out on the hole and fill in
divots with sand that should have been
filled by the one who created the divot;
however, it seems that some people just
refuse to take care of our courses, so this
job will always be available.
Adopt-A-Hole teams proceed to their as-
signed greens, where they take the time
to lift up the pitch marks left when the
ball digs into the green on an approach
shot and smooth it out so that the putts
will roll well. The sanding of divots and
repair of pitch marks are not how we
want to utilize our maintenance crews,
so this team is doing the rest of us a great
favor and, in the process, they establish
some good bonds with one another.
If you would like to see what it is like to
be part of the Adopt-A-Hole team, try
pouring some sand into the next divot
you make or one that someone else cre-
ated and failed to fill, and find a pitch-
mark on a green and gently lift it back
to where the surface is even. If you find
this is something you can and want to do,
contact Mike Pender, mike@penderfam-
ily.com. Mike can refer you to the team
captain for a hole near you.
Did you happen to notice that the theme
this month was “volunteers”? If you are
enjoying the Sun City Texas golf courses,
consider becoming a volunteer to help out
in one of these areas.
