Cold, wet weather early in the year re-
ally interrupted many people’s play but
it seems more golf friendly weather is
ahead. Even though the first meeting
of the year was held on a very cold and
windy morning, over 60 ladies demon-
strated their interest by attending the
meeting! The social committee wel-
comed everyone with roasted peanuts
and a sign at each table stating “We
are NUTS about golf.” A survey was
distributed seeking the membership’s
ideas and comments regarding upcom-
ing events. It was received most posi-
tively and the executive board will use
the results for future planning. With
the weather cooperating on January
22, many ladies were ready to hit the
course. No one knew what “game” the
computer had assigned. When the re-
sults were posted, players discovered
only the odd holes counted and only half
of each handicap was used. Not know-
ing how the scores will be determined
always makes for a fun day. Many of
the gals were hitting the ball well. Edie
Williams had a chip in on #8 of Legacy
Hills, while she, along with Karen Zang
and Gail Massad, had a birdie on the
same hole. The next meeting will be
March 12 at 11 a.m. with a shotgun
start at 1 p.m. on the front of Legacy
Hills. March 26 will be the Member
-Guest Mixed Invitational scramble.
Players may invite a male or female
member or non-member to be their guest
as long as the guest has an established
GHIN handicap. A social will take place
immediately following play.
not for the purpose of handicap
manipulation.
A “most likely score” is the score
a player must post for handicap
purposes if a hole is started but
not completed or if the player is
conceded a stroke. The most like-
ly score consists of the number of
strokes already taken plus, in the
player’s best judgment, the number
of strokes the player would take to
complete the hole from that posi-
tion more than half the time. This
number may not exceed the player’s
Equitable Stroke Control limit.
Example 1:
A and B are partners
in a four-ball stroke play competi-
tion. On a hole on which neither
player receives a handicap stroke, A
lies two, 18 feet from the hole. B lies
two, 25 feet from the hole. B holes a
putt for a 3. A picks up on the hole,
because A cannot better B’s score.
A records X-4 on the scorecard be-
cause 4 is A’s most likely score.
Example 2:
A and B are playing a
match. On a hole on which neither
player receives a handicap stroke,
A has holed out in 4; B has a 30-
foot putt for a 5. B has lost the
hole, and picks up. B records X-6
on the scorecard because 6 is B’s
most likely score.
Example 3:
A and B are playing a
match. On a hole on which neither
player receives a handicap stroke,
A is one foot from the hole, lying 4.
B is 10 feet from the hole, lying 3. B
putts andmisses. They both concede
a half. Both players record X-5 be-
cause that is their most likely score.
Note:
The use of the term “con-
ceded strokes” does not involve the
MGA local rule regarding the 18
inch “gimmie” marking on the pins.
This is a local ruling established
for pace of play and it’s use does
not create a score unacceptable for
handicap purposes.
It is felt that the best friend of the
Handicap Committee is an in-
formed membership.
Thanks to all members for their
support and their participation.
