not played in 30 to 35 years. But that is
precisely what happens for most of us:
we played growing up, went to work, and
now we get to play once again.
“All too often the newer players over-
extend themselves when they first start
only to quickly realize that the skills
they once possessed are not what they
are today…but it does get better as they
work themselves back into shape and
into the game.”
The softball league started with four
teams, grew to six teams by 2012, and is
estimated to reach seven or more teams
this year who play on Mondays and
Thursdays. The spring and fall leagues
are 10 weeks long, playing 20 games per
season and ending with a post-season
tournament and championship game.
There are two short summer sessions
and one short winter session lasting
about five weeks with 10 games each.
The season and the weather dictate start
times with earlier morning starts in the
summer and later starts in the winter.
Tuesdays and Fridays are reserved for
batting practice, pick-up games, and hon-
ing players’ skills.
There is even a Select Team sanctioned
by the club for players who exhibit a
higher skill level and express a desire to
play at that level. This team represents
Sun City Texas when playing outside
community teams at Del Webb Field.
Events & Games
While the players enjoy the games, the
exercise, the fresh air, and the cama-
raderie, there are many special events
throughout the year supporting many
local causes.
The league sponsors a day at the ball
park for local special-needs and at-risk
children. The children receive skills
training, play a game with a PA an-
nouncer calling their names, eat hot
dogs, and finally receive a Certificate
of Accomplishment. We’re not sure who
has more fun, the kids or the players!
In the fall, the University of Texas soft-
ball team comes to Del Webb Field to
play a game with the Sun City Texas
players. The UT players even take the
time to sign autographs and have their
pictures taken with the many spectators.
The club also hosts a two-day Blue Santa
Tournament in October to support the
Georgetown Police Department’s Blue
Santa Program. In October 2012, the
club raised $1,500 and collected a barrel
full of toys for the children.
The club also hosts a Veterans Day game
at the ballpark which is always played
following the Memorial Services at the
Veterans Memorial. Game participants
are veterans representing all armed forc-
es and are active members of the Softball
Club. This past year, there were enough
veterans to field three teams: one for the
Army; one for the Air Force; and one for
the Marines, Coast Guard and Navy. A
flag-raising ceremony with the singing
of the National Anthem is held before
the games, and a game announcer intro-
duces each veteran to the crowd.
A new event was added this year and
it was a big success—Grandkids Day
at the Ballpark. It was held the Friday
after Thanksgiving and was a hit for the
grandkids and especially their grandpar-
ents. The club provided some equipment,
a little guidance, and a lot of support
for the kids.
Opening Day
Your friends and neighbors are out at Del
Webb Field playing the game they love
and having a great time. If you haven’t
ventured out there to watch or play, you
should give it a try. Spring League 2013
Opening Day is March 4. Come on out
and be part of the fun, either to partici-
pate or to be a spectator; either way it’s
a blast. See you at the ballpark!
