A
triple January celebration for Larry Fowler - he has his 70th birthday;
he is our January Health Nut; and he moved to Sun City one year ago!
From age 7, Larry started team swimming in Gramercy, Louisiana. At 12,
his freestyle relay team placed third nationally in an American Athletic
Union Junior Olympic event. Larry swam competitively in college and in
the U.S. Army; he completed two triathlons and numerous running events.
Around age 56, he swam in the U.S. Master Swimming Program, placing
first in four events at state level competition. Larry once swam across a
four-mile lake in North Carolina in just two hours!
Larry swims three to four days per week in the Fitness Center’s lap swim-
ming program: butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke, and freestyle; kicking
and pulling exercises with hand paddles and pull buoys, too. Larry swims
between 1,900 to 2,700 yards per 45 minutes in Donna Duffy’s lap swim-
ming classes, or in an independent swim workout.
Larry feels “high” after a good workout, similar to a runner’s high. He is
energized, alert, and has a zest for life. Swimming has been instrumental in
maintaining a high level of cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, overall strength,
weight control and freedom from illness. He has no need for prescription
medications. Swimming, a no-impact form of exercise, has allowed Larry
to continue to engage in other forms of high-impact exercise, including an
occasional jog. He is thankful for his health.
Larry has decided to not participate in this thing called “old age.” He and
his wife walk their neighborhood, enjoying their neighbors. They have two
sons and their daughters-in-law close-by, so they intend to have many years
to enjoy their kids, grandkids, and the many friends they have made in Sun
City. Another passion of Larry’s is botany and ecology, having spent much
of his career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Larry loves family,
friends, forests, nature, knee-slapping, and soul-piercing music and books.
While diet and lifestyle are important contributors to the level of wellness
that he has, the Fitness Centers at Sun City have allowed Larry to focus
on his health and fulfill his exercise expectations.
