PSA Print SIG

Community Association

Glenn Rudd and Cheryl Janssen, co-leaders   [email protected], [email protected]

All members of Sun City Photography Club are eligible to participate in the Photographic Society of America (PSA) Interclub Print Competition.  Our PSA Print SIG (Special Interest Group) is organized specifically to select prints submitted by its members which are then entered in the inter-club competition. Historically, there have been 18 PSA member clubs regularly participating.  For each of the three seasonal competitions, the member clubs take turns acting as the Host Judging Club: November, February, and April.  Awards are given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, places and Honorable Mention and winners are also entered into the End-of-Year competition.

Also available is a  Framed Print Discussion Group which meets alternate months to discuss printing issues and to learn printing techniques. Members bring their printing questions to be answered at "The Doctor is In" segment and we watch tutorials. The group keeps a spreadsheet with printing-related information such as where to buy inks, frames, supplies; websites for paper profiles and printer links; and YouTube videos on printing.

Photo Submission and Selection

  1. There are five categories of prints: Small Color (SC), Large Color (LC), Small Monochrome (SM), Large Monochrome (LM), and Creative Altered Reality (CAR)
  2. "Small" sizes are 8.5" X 12.5" maximum, 'Large" sizes are 16" X 20" maximum.
  3. Prints must be un-mounted.
  4. Members bring to the meeting up to two candidates prints for each category.
  5. The prints are laid on tables for examination, segregated by categories.  A two or three-person panel will choose the top four selections in each category.  Each person has been trained in image evaluation and/or experienced in judging   photography.  No prints may be submitted by the judges.  The images are evaluated based on visual impact, composition, story-telling, and technical excellence.
  6. For each category, the four selections must be by different makers.  The prints are prepared and mailed to the Host Judging Club.
  7. The Host Judging Club then evaluates entries from all clubs and selects Honorable Mention, Third Place, Second Place, and First Place.  Approximately 10% of entries receive an Honorable Mention Award and 10% of entries receive a First, Second, or Third place award.
