The Sun City Texas Firewise program is in its eight year. When it began, there were about 700 Firewise communities in the USA. Today there is over 1300. There was concern about the dangers of wildfire and its possible effect on Sun City Texas. Firewise has evolved both in Sun City Texas and the nation. It is now going international. SCT is evolving into a showcase for how Firewise concepts can be applied to a wildland/urban environment like ours.

A major development has been the cooperation between Firewise Communities/USA and USAA insurance to define and justify a reduction in homeowner’s insurance premium. In fact, USAA visited Sun City Texas as they were researching the outcomes attributed to wildfire losses where Firewise concepts were applied in communities.

Firewise Communities/USA, National Update by Cathy Prudhomme, Firewise Communities/USA Program Manager. She will provide an overview of the national program and emphasize the important role local participants have in reducing their wildfire risk.

Why USAA Believes You Should Be Firewise by Rob Galbraith, USAA Director of Property Underwriting. He will discuss USAA’s research showing that Firewise measurably reduces the risk of loss due to a wildfire event and what USAA is doing to promote their Firewise discount. He will also discuss the importance of Ready, Set, Go – having a plan for you and your family to evacuate in case of a wildfire, preparing a “go” bag with critical items you’ll want to take with you, and knowing where to go when local authorities put an evacuation order in place.

Firewise in Texas: Past, Present & Future by Nick Harrison, Firewise Coordinator, Texas A&M Forest Service. A brief overview of the Firewise Program in Texas, including the cooperative efforts with the NFPA including promoting the Firewise Communities/USA program, participating in the Firewise Mapping project, educational projects at the national level; working with key Firewise Communities that have a sustained program and looking onto the future.

Residential Fire Safety by Chief John Sullivan, Georgetown Fire Department. He will address issues relating to residential fire safety such as smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and emergency access to the home (Knox Box). The Georgetown Fire Department will have equipment on hand if available.

The Home Ignition Zone in Sun City by the Firewise Group will wrap up with how the Home Ignition Zone is applied in Sun City and other updates.

Come early and stay after to enjoy conversations with our presenters, other groups and have coffee and donuts.
