SOLD OUT Painted Churches – Schulenburg Buffet lunch Thursday, Dec. 7, $59 pp Depart SCPL 7:15 a.m.; return 6 p.m. Tickets for this event go on sale on Monday, October 2 @ 8 a.m. Scattered through the rolling Hill Country and along the Blackland Prairie of Texas are 20 extraordinary churches. Their exteriors are similar to many country churches with arched Gothic windows, facades clad in white frame siding or stone, and lone steeples rising up to the Texas sky. Cross the threshold and encounter an unexpected profusion of color. Murals radiate from the altar, elaborate foliage trails the walls, stars and angels bedeck the ceilings, and wooden columns shine like polished marble. These are the Painted Churches of Texas. Built by 19th century immigrants to this rough but promising territory, these churches will transport you to a different era, a different way of life. Join us this holiday season for tours of four of these remarkable churches which include a step-on guide well versed in the history of each church and the stories of these buildings and their builders. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet of country comfort foods at the Oakridge Smokehouse. Before our tours, we will stop at Buc-ee’s in Bastrop for drinks and snacks which you may bring on the bus. Ticket cost includes transportation, guided tours, and lunch. Volunteer Trip Leader: Jerilee Prather |
