THIRD FRIDAY INTERNATIONAL SERIES - NOVEMBER 20, 1:00 P.M., ATRIUM

Alice Gardiner, an avid traveler to almost 100 countries, hiker, fisherman, nature lover, and Sun city resident will present "Costa Rica: Solar Electricity for the Developing World." For millions of poor, rural people around the world, solar electricity may provide the first electric lights a family has seen, replacing darkness at sunset with the opportunity to read, study, or enjoy themselves after a day of work.

Alice attended a workshop at the 500+ acres of Rancho Mastatal, adjacent to the beautiful La Cangreja National Park, a place of picture-perfect waterfalls, clear rivers, and mountains in one of Costa Rica's most unexplored regions.  She learned how to give this technology to the people who are most in need.

Alice says, "Living in a tree house made of bamboo with all meals made from plants and fruit found in the forest, I learned to appreciate a simpler way of life and the ingenuity of the indigenous people of the region.  My heart was filled with joy to be able to help install one or two simple LED light bulbs with energy create by the sun and captured wit a solar panel. The smiles on their faces when they flipped a switch and had light come on for the first time in their life in their home was worth the hours of class room education and other lack of comforts we are so used to here."
