Library Grand Reopening Today! Friday, November 17 • 9 a.m.
|
We’re excited to announce the grand reopening of the Sun City Texas Library at 9 a.m. on Friday, November 17. To celebrate the event we’ll have refreshments in the lobby and a tote bag for the first 100 people. Library volunteers will be available to show you around the new and improved library and help you find that next great read! Here are a few highlights of the new layout:- The previous shelving options allowed the library to house 11,000 books. The new and improved layout will allow the library to accommodate an additional 5,000 books!
- Paperback and hardback books are now shelved together by author.
- The Special Collection Wall (to your right as you enter) holds audio books, videos, local authors, large print and Christmas books.
- All nonfiction is now available along the wall to the left as you enter.
- Fiction books are categorized in the freestanding shelves in the center of the room.
Please note: New donations will not be accepted until after Thanksgiving, however, attendees are encouraged to return any labeled books previously borrowed from the library.

Watch for Deer & Cyclists
|
It's Deer Season
Just a note to remind everyone driving in the community during the early morning hours or at night to be very mindful of the deer that are plentiful in our community. We have had many residents hit them over the years and please know they can and will run in front of your cars, so be on the lookout. Thanks and be safe. _________ Cyclists May Ride Two Abreast
Sun City Texas is blessed to have a variety of activities and sports that enhance our active lifestyles and make our community the vibrant place so many love to call home. One such popular activity is cycling and unfortunately is has been brought to the CA’s attention that some of our drivers are being less than courteous to our cycling friends and neighbors. As such, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to be courteous to our cyclists (and our cyclists to our motorists & pedestrians too) and remind the community of the law regarding riding on our public roadways, especially when we see the cyclists legally riding two abreast on our two laned roads (Del Webb, Sun City Blvd, and Cool Spring Way).
Here is the language from the Texas Transportation Code: - The Texas Transportation Code, Chapter 551 addressing operation bicycles,
- Sec. 551.103, Operation on Roadway states:
- (c) Persons operating bicycles on a roadway may ride two abreast.
- Persons riding two abreast on a laned roadway shall ride in a single lane (that means single lane of the roadway, not single file).
- Persons riding two abreast may not impede the normal and reasonable flow of traffic on the roadway
- Persons may not ride more than two abreast unless they are riding on a part of a roadway set aside for the exclusive operation of bicycles."
Bottom line, it is legal and permissible for cyclists to ride two abreast on our three major roadways (listed above). They are not impeding traffic as there is a left lane automobiles can use to proceed safely around them. Cyclists, please ride single file when appropriate to avoid impeding traffic or creating unsafe situations on other streets. Please remember, bicycles are not permitted on our sidewalks or on the golf cart path between N-59 and Sun City Blvd.
Please, let’s keep our roads safe for all users. Thanks and Happy Holidays to all.

2018 Tax Return Volunteers Needed
|
If you have been preparing your own tax return and enjoy working with numbers and computers, then this is a volunteer opportunity for you to help our Williamson County community neighbors in 2018. We are also looking for volunteers to work in Pflugerville.
The program provides tax preparation training of approximately 40-50 hours in January 2018. Instructions include current tax code, computer tax program procedures, form completion and AARP policies. Training will take place at the Georgetown Health Foundation Offices on Williams Drive. We have volunteer sites in the Sun City retirement community, Georgetown, Round Rock, Taylor, Cedar Park, Hutto, Pflugerville, and Leander.
AARP‘s Tax-Aide Program is the nation’s largest volunteer free tax assistance and preparation service. Tax preparation and e-filing is provided to everyone except for those with complicated returns.
If you would like to help prepare tax returns in 2018 and join a great team, you can register on line at www.aarp.org/taxaide or call 888-687-2277. If you have questions contact Jim Burrell, AARP Sun City Local Coordinator, 512-819-1957.
