Bits from Ginny’s Desk – Compost
barrels and irrigation lines
Submitted by Ginny Wagner, Community Standards Supervisor
The November 2016 update to the Design Guidelines contains new
community regulations about composting barrels and irrigation.
A complete review of the new guidelines, which are located on the
Documents page of the Sun City Texas website, is required prior
to applying for these new features.
COMPOST BARRELS
Compost barrel guidelines are addressed on page 67 of the Design

approval prior to installation. The placement of only one vessel in
the rear yard of the property, twenty feet from both side property
lines and within 5 feet of the rear plane of the residence is the only
approved location. The maximum size of a composting barrel is
60 gallons. It must be located on a concrete pad and the barrel
must either be black, terra cotta or the primary color of the house.
Instructions for maintenance of the compost vessel are included
in the article describing the criteria for approval.
GUIDELINES FOR IRRIGATION PRACTICES
The Design Guidelines now include several paragraphs describing
irrigation practices in the State of Texas on pages 17 and 18. Texas
Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations are
covered in general; however, additional detailed information is
available online at the State of Texas website. As a broad overview,
residents may repair and/or relocate irrigation lines and/or change
out irrigation system sprinkler heads themselves; however, a
licensed irrigator must do the work if the homeowner does not
make the irrigation system alterations.
Have a wonderful August.
