The Poker Club held a Texas Hold’em

built around three existing oaks. Bill
worked with the slope of the yard to
create the appearance of raised beds
while keeping the soil around each tree
trunk as close to the original ground
level as possible. The new bed is light-
ly planted with a variety of drought-
tolerant plants including salvia greggi,
lantana and Jerusalem sage. The result
provides more soil for the tree roots
and less competition for water between
trees and surrounding vegetation. It
also adds visual interest to the front of
the house and blends well with existing
beds and the entrance walkway. An-
other earlier enhancement is visible in
the Wightman’s back yard. There Bill
and Mary Lou more than doubled the
