By Jaime Calder benefit the soldiers at Fort Hood.
In January 2016, we featured N34 resident Don Lumpkins, who has
spent the past six years collecting, cleaning and organizing gently
used golf balls for soldiers’ use at Fort Hood. These donated golf balls
save soldiers money and provide a much-appreciated opportunity to enjoy
some recreation on the base.
Don, who began providing this service for Fort Hood soldiers in memory
of his granddaughter’s husband Sgt. Scott Kirkpatrick, recently reached
out with an update on the ongoing project. In the four months since he
was featured in Sun Rays magazine, Don has received dozens of club sets,
clubs, shoes and accessories, as well as over 6,000 new and gently used
golf balls from residents in 14 different neighborhoods in Sun City Texas.
Today, Don has personally delivered 19,139 golf balls to the pro shop at
Fort Hood. On behalf of Don and all the soldiers at Fort Hood, we extend
our deepest thanks to all of you!
