Linda Atlee’s yard is how the use of
green, white and red underpins their
striking landscape. Linda tells me this
came about over time and somewhat
by chance. Foundation plantings of pale
boxwood and darker hollies plus a bit of
lawn created a green living background.
The builder introduced white, in the
stones that separate the back lawn
from an area of trees. It also appears
in a bright back patio, installed by the
Atlees, and borders a front yard bed.
Red entered the picture as a happy
mistake. Bill brought home the wrong
mulch. Linda tried it and liked it.

Against this colorful backdrop the Atlees
try to always have something in bloom.
In early spring, last year’s dianthus is
blooming across the front of the house
and variegated vinca major and ajuga
provide spots of blue out back. Two
special sights - a gorgeous red Japa-
nese maple perfectly placed by the front
kitchen window and, on the edge of the
trees, a statue of a sweet boy surround-
ed by boxwood and flowers.
