Firewise Town Hall:
Is Your Home Safe?

Tuesday, Oct 3
9:30 a.m. • Ballroom

In the event of a wildfire or a house fire, burning embers can fall on homes and ignite leaves and other debris resulting in additional loss. Your Sun City Texas Firewise program has been working for more than nine years to keep your community safe and educated about the steps you can take to protect your home from such a disaster. We’re among the 1,400 recognized Firewise communities in the nation and we work with leading experts including Firewise USA, the Texas A&M Forestry Service, Georgetown Fire Department, Williamson County Emergency Management and others. Join us to learn about recent updates you can use to keep your home Firewise.

Guest speakers include:

  • Rob Galbraith, Director of Property Underwriting at USAA, will discuss USAA’s reduction in the fire coverage premium.
  • Kari Hines, Wildland Urban Interface Specialist with Texas A&M Forest Service, will discuss how a community qualifies as Firewise.
  • Georgetown Fire Department will offer an update on their programs and activities and may have equipment on display.
  • Dan Dodson, Education Coordinator for the Sun City Firewise Group, will discuss recent updates in how residents can work to make their homes Firewise.

Holiday Heirlooms?

Many of us have one holiday item that we cherish above all the rest: a delicate ornament lovingly wrapped in paper. A serving dish reserved only for the grandest of occasions. Candlesticks carved by the hands of a loved one or a dog-eared cookbook with writing in the margins. With so many memories wrapped up in these and other objects, Sun Rays wants to know: Do you have a special holiday heirloom or keepsake? What is its history? How did it come into your possession? What memories or stories are connected with it? To be considered for publication in our December issue, send your story (300 words or less, please) to [email protected] by Friday, Oct. 27. Photos are highly encouraged.

Treating for Fire Ants

Submitted by Carlton M. Mathis, Common Area and Irrigation Superintendent

The CA will perform ant bait treatment during the month of October. Signage will be posted in high traffic areas as a reminder that it is time for residents to treat their yards, because treating for ants works best if we all treat at the same time.
DIY tips for successful application:

  • Do not schedule any irrigation for 48 hours, and wait until all dew has dried from turf area.
  • Do not apply if there is a chance of rain in the two day forecast.
  • Do not apply if temperatures are below 60 degrees.
  • Use small amounts of bait and broadcast with a small hand spreader. If applying by hand, be sure to wear plastic gloves and follow label directions.
  • Check with your lawn care company to see if ant control is included in your contract before purchasing a product.
  • Remember, if you see ant mounds during the year and you wonder if the product is working―ant bait is a means of control, not eradication.

October Watering

Submitted by Carlton M. Mathis, Common Area and Irrigation Superintendent

With the autumnal equinox behind us, thought needs to be given to a more reduced watering schedule. There are cooler days and nights ahead of us, and an overwatered landscape is a welcome invitation to fungus.

As the weather returns to a more seasonally appropriate trend, my recommendation for watering would be 2 days per week, and no more than a 75% water budget/seasonal adjust. Fall is typically wetter and cooler, so be ready to turn those controllers off.

The Water Matters Team is available to help familiarize you with your irrigation system. If you need help setting up your controller, or would like a complete and thorough evaluation of your irrigation system, send an email to [email protected], or contact your Neighborhood Representative. A Water Matters Ambassador will come to your home to assist you.

Second Phase of Common Area Mowing Begins

Submitted by Carlton Mathis, Common Area & Irrigation Superintendent, 512-948-7792, [email protected]

Weather permitting, we are planning to begin our second maintenance round of the Native Common areas on Oct. 2. Please find below the proposed neighborhood order of maintenance.

Although the majority of this process can handled by our mowers, there are some areas that are less accommodating and will need to be handled with line trimmers. The line trimmers can run up to two weeks behind the mowers. All cuttings will be left where they fall. This is a Fire Wise exercise only, and not for aesthetic or any other purpose.

CrimeReports Camera Registration Program

Submitted by the Georgetown Police Department

The Georgetown Police Department is initiating a new program to help deter and possibly solve crimes quickly through the registration of camera systems in homes and businesses throughout the city.

The CrimeReports Camera Registration is a 100% voluntary program that allows residents and businesses to register their location as one that has video surveillance equipment installed and operational. Police can then cross reference criminal activity with locations registered in the system and review relative recordings for information gathering and possible discovery of previously unknown evidence.

Key points:

  • Information is kept safe and secure; never made public
  • Only local law enforcement have access
  • The community can assist in reducing crime, the fear of crime and solving criminal cases
  • Service provided free to residents and businesses

The Department is continuously moving forward to enhance and strengthen our relationship with our community, and the CrimeReports Camera Registration Program is a great way of doing just that.

Citizens interested in participating in the program can learn more about it and sign up at: https://legacy.crimereports.com/camera_registration
