Holiday Decorations
Should Be Down Today

Submitted by Ginny Wagner, Community Standards Supervision, [email protected]

Today, January 15, is the last day that you can have holiday decorations. If you haven't removed them already, as you take down all holiday lighting and/or decorations, look around and note whether or not any dead or dying plants need to be removed or replaced in the existing beds in your yard. This can be done without filling out an application.

Cable Providers In
Sun City Texas

Questions: Periodically we get the question: Why can't we get a cable company other than Suddenlink? This is always followed by: And why does the city allow Suddenlink to raise their rates all of the time?

Answer: Texas adopted a Statewide Cable Franchise agreement provision in the 2005 Legislative session. Once all existing franchises with Cable operators expired they automatically transferred over to the Statewide Franchise agreement. Suddenlink's franchise agreement with the City ended in 2010 at which time they properly transferred over to the Statewide agreement.

Rates: Rates for retail service are held at the Texas PUC or at the Federal Level at the FCC. Any customer complaints related to rates and charges should be communicated to the Texas PUC since they are the regulating entity. There is a clearly accessible "complaint" system on the Texas PUC website.

Competition: The agreement with Suddenlink is NOT proprietary -- in other words, neither the city nor the state has entitled them to a monopoly for cable service in Georgetown. In fact, over time we have had franchise agreements with GRANDE and have inquiries from ATT as well. It is simply that Suddenlink has an enormous amount of physical assets in place, and customers on-line. Another provider would have to make a similar significant investment in equipment (cables, etc.) and then have to overcome Suddenlink's market saturation in order to succeed. So far no other cable company has been willing to make that investment.
