Common Area Irrigation
Submitted by Carlton Mathis
Common Area and Irrigation Superintendent

Sun City residents exclusively use potable drinking water for all their household and landscape needs. The captured residential waste water from sinks, showers, appliances and toilets is treated and delivered to Sun City holding ponds for irrigation of common areas and golf courses. The water used to irrigate is dependent on the usage habits of the citizenry of Georgetown. We supplement the City’s non-potable water with well water pumped from the Trinity Aquifer, which can sustain the pond levels at near capacity for nearly six months out of the year. Georgetown Utilities does not restrict our use of water simply because reclaimed waste water that we do not use, is returned back into the waterways.  We cannot be billed for that.

To water the entire campus, the Sun City irrigation system runs every day of the week. All individual irrigation zones are programmed to run two days per week. There are a couple of exceptions to the two days per week watering schedule. It is as follows - annual color beds and select median islands. They irrigate three times per week. Annual color beds do not have the roots to survive with less water, and the median islands are surrounded by hot asphalt which radiates into the median. Although every attempt is made to water during the evening hours, as drought conditions increase, overall run times will increase to compensate.

Daytime watering is a necessity on occasion. Apart from the monthly system inspections required by our maintenance contract, which can only be performed during the day, there are several determining factors that require the application of water outside of preferred watering windows. A system failure, which almost always occurs in hottest part of the season, can inhibit watering up to several weeks requiring daily watering to replenish the soil moisture. Soil uniformity does not exist here, actual depths can vary by as much as six inches in locations. The diverse soil conditions require complimentary watering programs. New plant material and sod require a period ranging anywhere between three and six weeks to establish.
Inspect Your Sprinkler System

Most of our sprinklers run during the nighttime so we do not see them working. During this very hot and dry period in August, some of our grass areas are not getting the proper amount of water because sprinklers are not working properly or they have damaged heads.

Please turn on your controllers and run each valve/zone to determine if each sprinkler is working properly. Just turn your controller to “Manual Run” position, set the controller to the respective zone you are trying to observe and “Start” the process.

If you need help with your system review, contact your Neighborhood Water Ambassador directly or email [email protected] for the Water Matters team.

You may also Click Here to request a free Water Matters evaluation of your controller.

Thank YOU for helping Sun City conserve water.

 Drought Conditions
in Texas

The City of Georgetown is asking water customers who have an irrigation system to reduce demand by using the Seasonal Adjust setting on their system controllers.

Take action now:
*Set Seasonal Adjust to 80 percent
*Water only on your days
*No watering on Mondays
*No lawn watering noon - 7 p.m.

Together we can prevent being restricted to one-day watering and/or low pressure.

Pool Reservation Requests

Starting on Monday, Aug. 31, residents with pool reservations will only be allowed to check-in five minutes before their reserved time.  Please wait in your designated area until you are allowed to check-in for your pool reservation. This will allow housekeeping and staff to safely clear and clean areas for the next group with reservations. Please remember part of your reservation time is allowing time to rinse off, dry off and to exit the areas. Our housekeepers work hard to keep everyone safe, so please allow them time to clean.

Please follow the 15 minute spa rule and capacity rule at each spa. If at any time the fitness staff feel that rules are not being followed and it is unsafe, we will close down the spas. We want everyone to enjoy all the pools and spas, so please get familiar with the new rules below.

Please be kind to your fitness staff. They are doing the best they can with all these reservations and transition times. Not following the rules or disrespecting the staff will get you temporarily suspended from the pools and spas.

Friendly Reminder:
Drone Use
Submitted by Carl Zimmerman
Community Standards Director

The community’s rules for operating drones or Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are in Paragraph F of Section V of the Community Association’s Amended and Restated Rules usually referred to as the Community Association Rules and Regulations. Some of the highlights of this section are that only electric-powered aircraft that weigh less than 10 pounds may be flown within the confines of Sun City. Outdoor flying is permitted during the day on the White Wing Golf Course driving range 30 minutes after the range is closed for the day. No flying is allowed when any maintenance workers or machines are on the driving range. Take off and landings will be from the designated takeoff/landing zone or as close to the driving range tee boxes as possible. Nighttime flights are prohibited. The Sun City community lies within the controlled airspace of the Georgetown Airport and drone/UAS pilots are required to contact the Georgetown Airport Tower at 512-868-3580 to advise them of their intention and seek permission to fly. Finally, no powered model may be flown outdoors closer than 25 feet to any individual, except for the pilot and the pilot's helper(s) located at the flight line. Under no circumstances may a pilot or other person touch a model aircraft in flight. The Sun City Radio Control Modelers Club has addition safety guidelines regarding the operation of drones /UAS.

Please contact the Sun City Radio Control Modelers Club for additional safety and operations details or Carl Zimmerman at 512-948-7461 with your questions about the community’s Governing Documents.
 Pet Do's and Don't's

Just a reminder to please keep control of your pet while out walking, especially when encountering other people and animals on sidewalks, streets and common areas. Dogs must be on a leash at all times (unless at the Dog Park) and under positive control so as not to interfere with or pose a threat to any person or animal.

Ask permission before letting your dog greet another dog or human. Some folks have had negative experiences with dogs and may not want to be greeted so 'enthusiastically'.

 Friendly Reminder:
Masks and Social Distancing

If you are out walking the trails and sidewalks, or talking with friends outside, please carry a mask for the times when you are not able to keep six feet of physical distance between you and people that are not in your household.

Dry Weather, Wildfires and Sun City
Submitted by the Firewise Group

Summer, dry weather and dry vegetation are the ingredients of a wildfire. Add a discarded cigarette, a running car parked on dry grass, or other sources of ignition - then add a 30+ mile per hour wind and a wildfire can get big quickly. A wildfire with woody vegetation involved will produce embers that the wind can carry some distance.

Sun City has wild land areas nearby. Those embers falling in Sun City could ignite vegetation and structures. The common areas within Sun City have had several wildfires over the years and several wildfires have occurred near Sun City over the past few weeks. These include the Florence fire and numerous roadside fires. Quick response by fire fighters has limited their size and impact.

Homeowners can check around the house to reduce the possibility of ignition. Keep leaves and other debris from accumulating near wood surfaces like door frames and wood decks. Also, make sure gutters are cleaned out.

Smoking materials have been the source of ignition in some cases. PLEASE DO NOT DISCARD SMOKING materials on the trails and golf courses! Dispose of these materials only in a safe container.

Please help the Firewise Group keep Sun City Safe!
