2014 is here! Wasn’t it wonderful to have
winter-like weather for a change during
the last twomonths of 2013? I do not recall
as many cold, windy, wet days like we had
in the last couple of months since moving
here inMarch 2011. Yes, the weather did
interfere with getting out on the course
on several days, but, surely, it helped the
vegetation!
December was a relatively slow month
for our group; however, four important
events did take place. The first was a
fabulous holiday luncheon held in the
ballroom. The tables were decorated in a
country theme with centerpieces of small
fir trees adorned with red bows and golf
tees. Spouses of the social committee cir-
culated among the guests, serving drinks.
The second event was the introduction
of the 2014 officers during the luncheon
and the distribution of awards for such
accomplishments as: fewest putts, most
pars, lowest gross and net for each course,
most birdies, and the most improved.
Thirdwas the newly-elected officersmeet-
ing with outgoing officers to share infor-
mation, ask questions and hand over any
materials necessary. This event occurred
at the last executive boardmeeting of the
year. Finally, the fourth important hap-
pening was the selling of mulligans and
donating money collected to Back Pack
Kids, a local Georgetown nonprofit.

mation. There are five things we live by:
have fun, maintain pace of play, have fun,
follow the rules, and, of course, have fun!

Notes from the Golf Committee
is cooler than the surrounding tempera-
ture, moisture from the air will begin to
condense on it. When this moisture (dew)
is present and the temperature dips near
freezing, it will form the frost.
Methods to reduce frost
Watering the course the night before can
have a positive effect on the amount of
frost the next morning, by keeping the
soil temperatures above freezing if the ir-
rigation takes place before a freezing tem-
perature occurs. Also, there are chemicals
that can be sprayed that will make a plant
unable to collect dew, thus no frost. Water
can be applied as well in the morning to
physically melt the frost. This method, if
not done properly and at a high enough
air temperature, can cause a light frost to
turn to ice, and a longer delay will occur.
All in all, the best practice is for every-
one to be patient and wait until the frost
turns to dew under normal conditions
– while you enjoy another cup of coffee.
