History of the Hiking Club

It all began on a scorching July day in 2000 when Dick and Rita Brown led eleven enthusiastic hikers to Colorado Bend State Park on what would be the first organized outing of the Sun City Hiking Club. Eleven years later, the Club’s roster includes more than 230 members -- and Colorado Bend State Park continues to be a favorite destination of Hike Leaders whenever the yearly hike Schedule is set.

Several years after its founding, the Hiking Club opted to become a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Nature Club and maintained its affiliation with that group until 2005. By the Spring of that year, however, enrollment in the Hiking Club had grown to more than 200 members and the decision was made to transition from a SIG to an independent entity.

The Hiking Club was then established as an official Chartered Club of Sun City Texas. As such, the Club is under the review of the CA’s Sports Committee. In addition, deposits and reimbursements are handled through the CA’s Support Services staff, in collaboration with the Club Treasurer.

Sixteen years later, members celebrated the growth and evolution of the Hiking Club with a "Sweet Sixteen" birthday retrospective -- complete with birthday cake!  The General Meeting of May 2016 featured a slide program with facts and photos showcasing major milestones of that period.  Click on the link below for a glimpse into the 16 years which followed the Club's founding.
