Weather Radios

One of the many functions that FCC-licensed amateur radio operators perform to provide public service to the community is to monitor the weather and help provide communications during severe weather events.  We understand it is not practical for everyone to obtain a FCC radio license and participate in severe weather communications.

Small weather radios are available for purchase that allow the public to listen to National Weather Service forecast bulletins, and even receive alerts when severe weather approaches.  These radios are relatively inexpensive, have battery back-up power, and operate even when the Internet is unavailable.  These can be purchased from local retailers such as Walmart and HEB or ordered online from Amazon.com, and do not require a license to operate.

The Sun City Amateur Radio Club recommends the Midland WR120EZ (newer model) weather radio since it is relatively simple to operate, affordable, and works well.  Note that these radios need to be set-up with local identifiers so that they alert only on emergency events within and near our community.

Our club hosts periodic events to help residents program their radios and change the batteries if needed.  We also have an online brochure to help select a weather radio and to set-up the recommended radio (click here: Weather Radio Buying Tips (Revised April, 2022)).

You can also learn about how to set-up your Midland weather radio on YouTube - Simply go to youtube.com and search for "Midland Weather Radios" to view the videos.

While we hope never to experience life-threatening severe weather, it is common in Central Texas for this kind of weather to occur.  Having a weather radio available is a good way to be be aware of changing weather conditions and be prepared in the event of severe weather.  We hope that this information is helpful.
