 Special Communicator
April 1, 2020
Submitted by Georgetown Police Department
Over the last several days, we have had a series of cases citywide where vehicles have had items stolen from them and three (3) incidents of vehicles being stolen. Many of the cases where vehicles had items taken and two (2) of the three (3) stolen vehicles were in Sun City. Every vehicle in the city that was burglarized was unlocked. Many cars contained high dollar items (guns, computers, prescription drugs, jewelry) that were taken. All of the stolen vehicles were unlocked and had the keys left in them. As of this date, all three stolen vehicles have been recovered. Two were recovered in Austin and one was recovered off a county road.

We recognize that no one has the right to steal from us. The reality however is that there are people out there who will steal from us if given the opportunity. Since the last series of residential burglaries in Sun City, the Georgetown Police Department has kept up increased patrols in Sun City. This however is the type of crime in which we need your help to solve and prevent! We need everyone to make sure they TAKE their keys from their vehicles, REMOVE valuables from their vehicles, and LOCK the doors of their vehicles.

Our patrol officers in Sun City look for things that are out of the ordinary or look suspicious. There is a significant amount of traffic however that comes into Sun City daily that involves non-residents. Most of that traffic is legitimate but it also contains those who mean to take advantage of opportunities to commit theft. You as residents are in the best position to see what is truly out of the ordinary or suspicious. When you see that, please report it to us immediately! We are then able to respond immediately and take action accordingly. On more than one occasion we have seen incidents in which suspicious activity gets reported to Nextdoor, an email group, or the Community Association but not to the Police Department. Please make sure you contact us immediately when you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious.

Finally, we also strongly encourage the use of outdoor home video systems such as Ring, Nest, or other reputable manufacturers. The systems are nominally priced and easy to install. Many law enforcement agencies are having great success with generating leads and clearing cases utilizing video from these cameras.
