AH-CHOO!

For those of you who suffer with cedar fever or other annoying Texas allergies, you have our deepest sympathies.

But if it’s a full-blown cold or even worse -- the flu -- that’s causing you to sniffle, sneeze and cough, please be kind to others and stay at home. Germs can spread like wildfire in the gym or in aerobic classes such as cycling or Pilates, where we are all in close proximity to one another.

Cold and flu season is also a good time of year to remind everyone to always practice good gym etiquette and wipe down all equipment after use. Canisters of disinfecting wipes are scattered throughout both fitness centers for your convenience.

Tips from the Trainers
The Sartorius

Today in our core series, we will talk about the Sartorius muscle. Did you know the Sartorius muscle is the longest muscle in the body?
This muscle is also a hip flexor, and as you probably suspected, works in similar ways to other hip flexors such as the Psoas. But the Sartorius is unique in its positioning and allows the muscle to act as a knee flexor too. In addition, the Sartorius helps stabilize the lumbo-pelvic-hip-complex.

The Sartorius begins at the top of the hip bone and extends down across the quadriceps and around the adductors and turns laterally toward the middle of the knee.

The Sartorius muscle engages the minute you cross your legs, or pick up your foot to the look at the sole. The Sartorius carries the nickname of “The Tailor’s Muscle” due to the fact that tailors sit in a cross position when doing their work.

Performing leg raises is one way to work the Sartorius. Stretching the Sartorius can be tricky because many stretches require you to get in what can be an uncomfortable position while stretching out on the mat. Also, the Sartorius is prone to overstretching, so it is best to seek the advice of a Sun City personal trainer if you are unsure how to stretch this vital muscle.
