Firewise Town Hall
Wildfires & Sun City Homes: Perceptions and Reality
Submitted by the Firewise Group

Tuesday, Oct. 8
9 a.m. SCB

What is your perception of why structures burn from wildfires? Come to our Town Hall where we will review the wildfire research and documentation through discussion, videos and more for a better understanding. The Georgetown Fire Department plans to review escaping your home in case of a fire. Texas A&M Forest Service will provide an update for Firewise in Texas.

Research and documentation show that embers from a nearby wildfire are the major cause of home fires. Is your home prepared for embers from a nearby wildfire? A review of how a house is constructed, what is around it and other factors contribute to the possibility of a home burning will be included.

Drought and wildfires have always been a concern in Central Texas. The September 26 Drought Monitor reported that Sun City and Williamson County were in extreme drought conditions. This may indicate an increased potential for wildfires.

Join us as we review the research about people’s perceptions about wildfires, wildfire behavior, how a wildfire could affect your Sun City home and what you can do to reduce the potential for embers to ignite your home. And have some coffee and a donut!
TELL US YOUR PILGRIM STORY
- Deadline Extended -

Coming to America

A pilgrim - in America - is someone who immigrated here first. Are you a modern day pilgrim? Did you immigrate to the United States? In honor of America's cherished holiday, Thanksgiving, Sun Rays is asking for your immigrant story.

When did you arrive? How and why did you leave to come to America? What challenges did you face on your journey and once you got here. Who helped you? What are you most thankful for about life in your new country?

Please send your story to Jaime Calder, [email protected], no later than Monday, Oct. 7, for inclusion in the November issue of Sun Rays. We kindly ask that submissions be limited to 350 words or less. Photographs are highly encouraged. If you need help in arranging a photograph or handling old pictures, please contact Jaime Calder at 512-948-7745.

NAME THAT PROGRAM!
Contest to Name an NRO Program

A new NRO Committee invites your help to name its new program benefiting all Sun City residents. The Program will serve two functions: (1) as a clearinghouse for easily-accessible community resources to help maintain and improve our quality of life and (2) as a forum coordinating educational events, health education and sponsoring of town halls and lectures to keep us informed and connected. The Committee is seeking a name that is catchy, succinct and will become highly recognizable in our community.

The Committee welcomes your ideas to name this new Committee. Please email your program names to [email protected] no later than Friday, Oct. 18. If your name is selected, you will receive a $100 gift card compliments of the Community Association.
Attention All
Block Captains

For some time now, we have been trying to communicate with each and every Block Captain, but because of summer travel and schedule challenges, we are still failing to connect with a large group of Block Captains.

We need a completed information sheet from all of you because we are developing an important, comprehensive communication list for the future of SCTX. It is important that communications be in place for each block.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, at 9 a.m. in the Ballroom there will be a one-hour workshop to simplify some of the Block Captain efforts. This workshop has been in development for several months with a goal of keeping the message simple, clear cut and manageable for your contact with residents within your individual blocks. The effort is to provide useful and usable information for new as well as experienced Block Captains.

Each participant will be awarded a certificate of completion and copies of the presentation materials for your future reference and use. Each segment will be helpful, but information provided in the social section alone makes it worth your time and attendance.

Please complete and return the attached registration/information form to the Texas Drive monitor's desk. Click Here to print the form or pick one up at the TD monitor's desk.

Let us hear from you soon.

Friendly Reminder:
Please don't block the mailboxes
Submitted by Jim Romine, Executive Director, [email protected]

We have been asked by our local post office to remind residents not to block mailboxes with their trash cans or other items that make it difficult to access mailboxes. Please remember to provide your carrier with plenty of room because if the box is blocked, the carrier is not required to service the mailbox. The diagram below gives you some suggestions for better trash can placement.

Thank you in advance, Jim (and your mail carrier)!

Treating Fire Ants

The CA is putting bait out for fire ants this month. Signs will be posted around campus to remind residents that it is time to treat their yards. Treatment works best if we all treat at the same time!
Native Area Maintenance Plan

Weather permitting, we are planning to begin the second pass of our bi-annual maintenance of the Native Common areas the first full week of October. Please find below the proposed neighborhood order of maintenance.

City/County News
Outdoor Warning Sirens:
Growl Testing

Georgetown's outdoor warning sirens, which are located throughout the Sun City Texas community, are tested on the first Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. with two back-to-back, 90 second audible tests.

These sirens are one method of alerting residents about impending hazards, such as tornadoes or severe weather. If you hear the sirens (other than the scheduled tests), please seek immediate shelter.

Growl Testing

In addition, the City will begin doing what is known as a “growl test” on each of the alternate Saturdays when the regular siren is not tested. A growl test only lasts 30 seconds or so and emits a low growl-like sound, from which it gets its name. Testing each Saturday (either with the full siren or the growl test) allows the City to ensure that the sirens are working and helps prevent the sirens from seizing or failing.

Note: No testing will be conducted during severe weather or if there is a threat of severe weather to avoid confusion.

What to Expect from Hearing Aids

Corrected Date
Thursday, Oct. 10

The presentation will be "What to Expect from Hearing Aids: What they can and cannot do" which will be especially helpful to folks just beginning to look at hearing aids and those just beginning to adjust to new aids.

We all tend to expect hearing aids to "fix" our hearing much like eye glasses fix our vision, but they cannot do that! So, come and find out what they CAN do. Everyone is welcome.
