Tips from the Trainers
Lipids 101

We’ve all heard the story. “Abs are built in the kitchen,” or, “Getting in shape is eighty-percent diet.”

Well, that’s true, but it’s not the whole picture. Why is it that when we diet, we constantly check our midsections for fat loss, only to get disappointed? It turns out that when we put our bodies in a caloric deficit, our lipids go into overdrive and start moving around (Wouldn’t you panic if you’re about to die?). Anyway, out of all the lipids that come out looking for another hiding place, only one-third get burned up. The majority of lipids nestle back into the body, in the places with the least amount of blood flow—you guessed it—the abdomen.

In fact, a study done by the American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, women who took on a low calorie diet, without exercising, saw their abdominal fat cells increase by five percent.

So, how do we combat this problem?

We must pair our diet with exercise. Period. The blood has to flow through the abdomen for it to burn like we want it to. Cardio and resistance training must go hand-in-hand with that caloric deficit.
Need proof?

The findings of the same study quoted above indicate that the women who exercised while dieting saw that their abdominal fat cells decrease by ten-percent. Not too bad.

Of course, living in a caloric deficit while maintaining an adequate level of exercise can be tricky if done improperly. This relationship can lead to fatigue, etc. Always seek the advice of your physician before beginning any exercise program. And after that, consider seeking the advice of a fitness professional to keep you on track and energized!
