Tips from the Trainers
What you don't know about calcium...

Raise your hand if you think calcium is only for the bones and teeth. Okay, we have some explaining to do.

Many people are surprised to learn that calcium provides more than just a resource to strengthen bones and teeth. While it is true that bones and teeth take up 99 percent of the calcium in our bodies, the final one percent, while seemingly small, goes a long way.

Calcium helps prevent hypertension and helps reduce the risk of kidney stones. It also aides muscle contractions and cell metabolism. For example, calcium is located at a point in or muscle fibers propelling our muscle proteins to interact. Intrigued yet?

Well, calcium also plays a pivotal role in every step of the blood clotting process. According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine, “Blood will not clot in the absence of calcium.” But fret not. According to NASM, seldom will calcium levels drop so low as to prevent clotting (that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get your calcium).

Next time you think that calcium is just for the bones, or teeth, think again. That bicep curl you just did happened in part because of, you guessed it, calcium.
Make sure you’re getting your daily allowance, and keep your entire body strong!
