Flags at the Georgetown-Williamson County Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sun City

Recently, we have received inquiries regarding why flags at the Georgetown-Williamson County Veterans Memorial Plaza behind the Social Center are not displayed at half-staff when it might be deemed appropriate to do so. Please see below for more information about the flag protocol in Sun City Texas.

Representatives of the Veterans Memorial Advisory Group (VMAG) are responsible for changing the position of the flags at the entry building. The VMAG has a schedule for lowering and raising the flags on the five (5) days specified by the Flag Code. These days are May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day; May 28, Memorial Day; July 27, Korean Veterans Day; September 11, Patriots Day; and December 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The actual date for Memorial Day varies each year as it is the last Monday of May. The VMAG also inspects the flags and the moving parts of the flag poles on a quarterly basis and reports any deficiencies to the CA Facilities Staff.

The flags may be moved to half-mast if the President directs such an action country-wide; however, in most cases, the directions relate only to flags on federal property and buildings. Similarly, the flags may be lowered if the Texas Governor so directs; however, again the directions normally relate to state property and buildings.

The flags at the Veterans Memorial are the responsibility of the VMAG; however, those flags are never lowered to half-staff since they are an integral part of the Memorial as designed and built. This Memorial was approved in its configuration as an intact memorial. The intact Memorial honors ALL memorialized, not merely those most recently honored by Presidential or Gubernatorial edict.

The flags in front of the Sales Center at the intersection of Del Webb and Sun City Boulevards are the responsibility of the developer.
