Friendly Reminder: Responsibilities of Pedestrians

Spring is in the air and more residents are getting out and about in the community. As a pedestrian in Sun City Texas, you should always use good judgment and not interrupt the flow of traffic. Here are a few good reminders/ tips for pedestrians from the Texas Department of Transportation.

Use Sidewalks

When there is a sidewalk, use it! Most pedestrian traffic accidents happen when someone is walking in the roadway. Be very alert when crossing any roadway. Stay on the right-hand side of crosswalks. Drivers are supposed to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Cross at Intersections and in Crosswalks

Yield to vehicles on the roadway if you cross the street at a place other than a marked crosswalk or pedestrian tunnel or crossing. If you're hit while jaywalking, the driver may not be liable, and his or her auto insurance may not cover your injuries.

If the road has no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

  • Always cross at intersections. Look left, then right, then left again before proceeding.
  • Look for traffic when stepping off a bus or from behind parked cars.
  • As a passenger, get in or out of a car on the curb side of the street.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before you cross the street.

Guest speakers: Georgetown Police Chief, Fire Chief,

and Emergency Management Coordinator

NEW! Sun City residents are significant targets for fraud, scams, and burglaries of vehicles. Georgetown is the most rapidly growing city in the United States, and with growth comes more criminal activity and homelessness.

We will host Police Chief Cory Tchida and Fire Chief John Sullivan to give us the latest news for our town.

As a bonus, we have Christy Rogers, Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Georgetown, who will help us understand what we can do to be ready. She will also cover the City’s plans for the April 8 Solar Eclipse and how we are affected.

The EMC Town Hall is the place to get those questions answered. Join us this year when Chiefs Tchida and Sullivan speak about and answer your questions. And learn even more from Christy Rogers. We look forward to seeing you there!

One more bonus: we are serving coffee and donuts for all attendees! Doors open at 8:30am so that you can visit at the tables for these organizations (and get donuts).
