Use of balls in the swimming pools

Certain restrictions concerning balls in the swimming pools need to be addressed to assure that no harm or injury will occur to any occupants of the pool. Any balls such as volleyballs, nerf balls that are soaked with water, hard rubber balls, etc. are not allowed. Beach balls and soft rubber balls are allowed with certain conditions. Tossing the allowed balls, not throwing with force, between persons is allowed over short distances, not across the pool or over other people. It is important that we follow these rules to avoid any conflict or injuries and that all occupants can enjoy the pools. Fitness provides appropriate balls for everyone's use. You can find them in the noodle bins outside.

Proper Locker Room Etiquette

If you’re the grandparent or host of a young visitor to our Fitness Center pools, we ask you to please refrain from taking boys into the women’s locker room and girls into the men’s locker rooms. Many Sun City residents feel uncomfortable sharing these areas with children of the opposite sex, no matter what the child’s age. And on the flip side, the experience is likely not advantageous for the child either.

If a child is too young to be unattended in same-sex facilities, please make arrangements for them ahead of time. At Texas Drive, we recommend using the gender neutral, handicapped restroom located between the locker rooms. The Cowan Creek fitness center has smaller bathrooms at the opposite end of the building and the Retreat has outside bathrooms for use or the gender neutral, handicap restroom located by locker rooms.

Fitness Staff of the Week

Janeen

I was born in Wisconsin (a 'Cheesehead' and lifelong Packer fan) but have also lived in Wyoming, Houston, and Northern VA before moving to Sun City. My husband and I will celebrate our 45th anniversary soon and have two children – one who lives in Austin and one in Detroit. I was an elementary PE teacher for 26 years and was named the Elementary PE Teacher of the Year for the state of VA in 2000. I taught square dance to all my students and ended the unit with a performance the parents enjoyed. I was also an Athletic Administrator for eight years which was also very rewarding…and exhausting.

I was a runner for 30 years, racing in mostly 10K’s, but also tried a couple sprint triathlons and finished my running career with the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. I also took clogging lessons for several years and performed at local/regional events. We moved to Sun City in 2020. When I am not working you can find me playing pickleball, golf, bocce, bowling, walking my dogs or gardening. Life IS good!

TIPS FROM THE TRAINERS

TAKE YOUR FITNESS WITH YOU

Allison Worley, Personal Trainer

Travelling takes you to different destinations, near or far, and offers incredible experiences but often you deal with challenging schedules, confusing languages, strange beds, and too many tempting food choices. So how, amongst the adventure, excitement and variety of travel, do you make fitness your constant?

As you plan your travel and pack your bags, take time to reflect on your why. Why do you care about staying healthy? Why are you personally motivated to stick to your fitness goals? Then start to consider how you will fit your why into your holiday. Where will you be each day? What will you be doing? Who will you be with? When will you make choices to be healthy? Everything changes when you are away, so how do you attach your fitness to yourself and not to a certain time, place, or class? As part of your trip planning, start to think about small rituals you will need to follow to maintain your fitness momentum. This is easier to do when you are clear about your why.

It's probably true to say that when you are away your diet won’t be perfect, neither will your sleep schedule, and it will be tough to devote time to exercising when itineraries or family are demanding your attention. Even with the best of intentions, there will be times when you won’t be able to meet your fitness expectations but remind yourself that your health is not a 100% or nothing situation. Every decision counts, every meal counts, and any choice you make that leans towards your fitness goals is a win.

Overindulging on local delicacies is part of the travel experience. Accept that there will be “bad” meals but try to never eat 2 bad meals in a row. Reduce portion sizes by offering to share meals, especially if leftovers don’t fit into your plans. Keep healthy snacks with you to help avoid impulsive temptations and prioritize protein and fiber to help keep you full. Almonds and jerky make easy travel snacks. Remember that people who exercise tend to make better food choices.

Strange beds, time changes and lively destinations can make it difficult to sleep so be proactive by packing ear plugs and a sleep mask.

Your ‘gym’ can be anywhere. Hold onto a sink to do squats and lunges, lean on a wall to do push-ups. Resistance bands are light, inexpensive and perfect for getting in a great workout wherever you are. Use your backpack for creative resistance exercises. If you’re outside, nature is your gym. Walk often and take stairs if you can. Stretch your body – it will thank you. Be creative and move every day.

And wherever you are, whatever you are doing, Stay hydrated!

Just because you’re out of your routine doesn’t mean you have to put your healthy habits on hold. With a little planning and a dose of creativity, you can easily sustain the habits you’ve spent months or years building.
