Firewise around your home – Spring reminders
Spring weather brings Sun City residents outside to their patios, decks and gardens. Enjoy the beautiful outdoors with this thought in mind: What can I do to protect my home, my property and my neighbors from wildfire risks? A few simple tasks will reduce wildfire risks on your property.
- Clean up your planting beds and landscaping. This annual maintenance is especially important this year after the damaging February freeze. Many landscape plants have dropped dry dead foliage and twigs that accumulate at the base of the plants. This debris can serve as an unintended fuel source should wildfires develop in the area.
- Hook up a garden hose to both the front and rear hose bib connections. These safeguards should be in place BEFORE they are needed.
- Begin, or continue, your normal irrigation schedule. Healthy landscape plantings are less flammable.
- In the event that a fire is detected nearby, DO NOT use additional water on your landscape or property in an effort to soak it thoroughly. Doing so will reduce the community’s water supply that may be needed for fire suppression efforts.

City officials concerned about concrete plant near Sun City
City of Georgetown residents and officials are raising concerns about a proposed concrete batch plant on Ronald Reagan Boulevard just south of Hwy. 195. According to the public hearing notice for the plant on the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality website, the Five Star Concrete plant would be located about one mile from homes in the Sun City neighborhood.
Concerns about the concrete plant include dust and noise from plant operations that are not compatible with a large senior adult residential neighborhood. Increased traffic from concrete trucks on Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Hwy. 195 is another concern about the plant.
|
|
Message from Commissioner Valerie Covey
I wanted to give everyone an update regarding the Five Star Concrete plant that is proposed on Ronald Reagan Blvd. As stated in my previous communication (available below), I contacted a representative of the company and relayed your questions and concerns. I also asked some additional questions to get as much information as possible.
Here are some key points that I want to highlight for you:
1. There will not be any quarrying operations occurring at the batch plant. This location was selected because of its proximity to other quarries in the area, but will not be conducting blasting on their property.
2. They will have their own well and plan to recycle their water.
3. They will pave the roadways on which the concrete trucks will drive; this significantly reduces dust.
4. Pending approval, after the May 10, 2021 public hearing, construction will begin soon (most likely this Summer).
5. Williamson County is obligated to give them a driveway permit in order for them to access their property; there is no opportunity to deny a permit if safety specifications are met. The permit will be issued so that the driveway is placed in an area that is safe and optimizes sight distance.
6. The company will be utilizing approx. 7-8 acres of the 41 acre tract
a. Pending approval, their operation will be set back from the roadway
b. They plan to keep as many trees along the property line as possible
I plan to submit a letter of support requesting that the community’s voices be heard during the May 10th public hearing and that the TCEQ commissioners give attention to your concerns.
