Every year the AARP Tax-Aide Foundation provides free, in-person tax preparation, advice and electronic filing in Sun City. You do not have to be an AARP member. It's very popular and there are normally 20-30 people waiting when they begin. Read more below to find out about the sign-in sheet!
How it works:
- AARP can accommodate around 60 – 70 taxpayers each Friday.
- Each return takes approximately 45-60 minutes to prepare and then another 30-45 minutes to review/discuss with the taxpayer.
- There are 17 volunteers who work each Friday (and there is not space for more volunteers.)
- Two of the volunteers maintain the sign-in sheet and quality review schedule; 14 volunteers prepare/review tax returns. There is a supervisor who "floats" between all functions.
Sign-In Sheet:
- There is a sign-in sheet and it is recommended that you come early and put your name on it.
- When the sign-in sheet reaches 65 taxpayers, they inform the taxpayer that they have to come back another Friday or go to another site in Georgetown.
- To eliminate the over-crowding that occurs at Cowan Creek, they start taking phone numbers for those individuals whose number on the sign-in sheet is above 25. They then call them when their time to see a counselor approaches.
