In 1930s Chicago, Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford), a small time grifter, pulls a street con and unknowingly steals from big-time crime boss Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). Lonnegan then demands satisfaction for the insult. After his partner Luther is killed, Hooker flees and seeks the help of one of Luther's contacts, Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) - master of the long con. The stakes are high in this game, and Hooker and Gondorff must not only deal with Lonnegan's murderous tendencies, but also with side players who want a piece of the action. To succeed in this ultimate con, Hooker and Gondorff need to use all their skills!
